WF workshops are part of the Spontaneous Schooling Exhibition in London

6 workshops conducted to date by Workshops Factory in Poland and in USA will be featured on Spontaneous Schooling Exhibition in London. The exhibition is curated by Nous gallery as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2010.

Thanks to the courtesy of Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology the exhibition will feature 3d printed models of students’ works from our very fist workshop, wf_091 conducted at the WAPW in Warsaw. Below are some photos of the models currently travelling to London.

The exhibition opens Friday 18 of June 2010 at 6pm.

The venue is: 3.01 Tea Building, 5 – 13 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6JJ.

2D pattern

This is one of the patterns I designed when I was working for Gage/Clemencau Architects. The idea was to achieve the impression of a three dimensional image on a 2D surface.

Protospace 3.0 Mock-up

The video presents process of assembling Protospace 3.0 mock-up. The projet was done during msc 2 Hyperbody studio class at the TU Delft (in collaboration with ONL).
WF’s Agata Kycia and Krzysztof Gornicki were involved in 3D modelling and creating generative procedure for the design. The project was developed in Rhinoceros, using rhinoscript.
Later on projet was continued in the Hyperbody Research Group mainly by Owen Slootweg and Jelle Feringa. Presented prototype is located in a new Protospace Laboratory at TU Delft.

The purpose of the project was to explore new possiblities in 3d modeling and digital fabrication techniques. Thus pavilion the form of the pavilion was scripted using Rhinoscript and later on all the generated components were hot wired out of EPS foam. Next each one of them was coated to make it waterproof and fully structural. There are also some wooden elements embedded inside them to reinforce floor of the pavilion.

Rhino, Ansys…..Grasshopper.

This little demo shows the ability to interact dynamically with the plug in in real time allowing for a more intuitive form finding process. Using the c# module in grasshopper I was able to transfer my plug in to make something a bit more playful and interactive. WIP version will be available soon.

Tarp Release

WF’s Erik Thorson has been fortunate enough to participate in this years issue of tarp. Release party tomorrow night, in the borough of Brooklyn.

This year’s issue focuses on the engagement of digital processes which are currently at the forefront of architectural discourse and practice. Various computational methodologies, such as parametric systems, generative processes, and scripting, all pose questions on organizational strategies, formal qualities, and branding, just to name a few. The work presented in this issue speculates on the significance of these techniques through a critical, if at times tentative lens of theoretical inquiry and practical application.

WF at an Nous gallery exhibition on London Festival of Architecture 2010

The workshops conducted by Workshops Factory to date will be featured on an exhibition by Nous gallery organized as a part of the London Festival of Architecture 2010. The exhibition aims at presenting a variety of computational design workshops which took place in the last couple of years and the key question is how can workshops contribute to the architectural teaching and the emerging discipline of computational design. The exhibition will open in London’s Shoreditch in June. More info will follow soon.

Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication Workshop in Lima Peru

ARTificial invited Krystian Kwiecinski to co-tutor together with Luis Odiaga the AW1 which will run from the 19th till the 24th of April in Lima Peru.

The AW1 is one week Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication Workshop organized by ARTificial. It´s open to designers from Latin-America who want to start using Rhinoceros and learn parametric design techniques in Grasshopper. All the tasks are going to be finalized with digital fabrication allowing participants to get familiar with CNC machines. The workshop will start with the series of lectures open to the public.

FEA analysis – plugin. Ansys + Rhino

Using c# with rhino and FORTRAN with Ansys I was able to create a FEA testing environment within Rhino. This enables the designer to get feedback on the proposed structural system allowing him to make changes during the conceptual phase of a design. This process does is not intended to replace the structural engineer by any means but rather provide information to better the design before ever approaching the engineer. The current plug-in evaluates stress and displacement for lattice structures using tube elements. Surface and solid interfaces are nearly completed and will be posed soon.

Ansys to Rhino

This is a screen-shot of a rhinoscript I wrote while attending IaaC. This is a bi-product of the structural evolution project in my previous post. It allows one to view the results of an FEA test done in Ansys in Rhino. It also lets allows you to 3d print the results in color.

This was the first project I completed using Ansys and Rhino to create an evolutionary structure. I completed this in IaaC last year with Luis Fraguada of LaN

Rhinoscripting Workshop in the Hyperbody Studio at the TU Delft – day03

In a 3rd day of the workshop we focused on developing computational techniques for digital fabrication. Students were were writing different scripts for unfolding and numbering processes and creating rib-structures out of any possible surface. The purpose of this session was to prepare students for making final prototypes of their msc3 studio design proposals. At the end all the participants could consult their studio project with all the tutors in terms of possible applications of Rhinoscripting.
