digital fabrication – a pipe

4 08 2008

“A pipe”, praca wykonana w ramach zajec Digital Fabrication w Iaac pod kierownictwem Marty Male-Alemany, prezentuje mozliwosci jakie otwiera modelowanie 3D polaczone bezposrednio z technologia wycinania. Wszystkie elementy modelowane byly w Rhino a nastepnie skladane w calosc. Ponizej widac cala instalacje oraz nasza czesc : proces skladania, finalny projekt i pliki gotowe do wyciecia:

A pipe, project done in the Digital Fabrication course in Iaac under tutorship of Marta Male-Alemany, conststing simply of vertical and horizontal sections, presents possibilities and potentials of 3D modelling directly transferred into lasercut files. The one was a part of a bigger installation of differentiated parts that come together, that is hanging in the hall of Iaac. All the elements were drawn in Rhino and then assembled. Above you can see the whole assembled installation and  our part: process of assembling, the final part and lasercut files:

‘Bird House’

4 08 2008

‘Bird House’ jest to projekt wykonany podczas seminarium w Iaac-u w kolaboracji z Vasco Portugal. Prezentuje on w sposob kompletny proces od modelowania za pomoca rhino scriptingu po cyfrowa fabrykacje.

‘Bird House’ is scripting seminar project at the Iaac (done in collaboration with Vasco Portugal), which shows all the generative process from modelling by rhino script to digital fabrication.

House Wrap – Parametric House

4 08 2008

‘Parametric House’ to projekt wykonany podczas drugiego semestru studiow w Iaac-u, w studiu zajmujacym sie cyfrowymi procesami we wspolczesnej architekturze. Celem projektu bylo stworzenie uniwersalnej formy 3d, ktora kontrolowana za pomoca kilku zmiennych parametrow moglaby sie w prosty sposob dostosowywac do kolejnych uzytkownikow badz lokalizacji.
Czesc prywatna (sypialnia, kuchnia, wc) zawarta jest w nieduzym boksie ktory czesciowo dopasowuje sie do oplatajacej go plaszczyzny i wspolgra z nia zagospodarowujac w ten sposob obszar dzialki.

‘Parametric House’ is a project done during second term of Iaac in Digital Tectonics studio by Marta Male Alemany. The purpose of that design task was to show the variations of objects (in this case single family house) driven by some specific parameters.
‘House Wrap’ derives from the definition of private space, is based on searching for borders between public area and private one. Main part of the project is flat surface (plane) with two grids: grid of folds and grid of holes. Both of the are related to each other and controlled by some parameters. In that way it is possible to use this 3d model to play with ‘neutral’ space and define basic zones of human needs.

The Dome – full scale, realised and parametric project

4 08 2008

‘The Dome’ to projekt wykonany podczas trzeciego semestru studiow w studiu Digital Fabrication prowadzonym przez Marte Male Alemany w Iaac . Jest to wynik cztero-tygodniowej pracy dwudziestu studentow w pieciu roznych grupach (modelowanie, fabrykacja).
Proces cyfrowego modelowania zajal okolo 3 tygodni pracy, natomiast sama fabrykacja niespelna tydzien.

‘The Dome’ is project designed and realized by the group of 20 students during third term of
Iaac Master Course at the Digital Tectonics studio supervised by Marta Male Alemany.
Digital model of the dome was developed in parametric software, called Top Solid, and its shape is easily controlled by two different splines. That model was a base for almost 1200 triangular components (each one of them is different and customized to specific shape of final object), which were inserted and unfolded (for laser cutting machine) in the another, associated files. Thus every single change in the preliminary shape was followed by new 2d shapes for cutting. Design part took 3 weeks of working in five specialized groups (modelling, fabrication, etc.), all fabrication was done during one week.

‘pillows’ – adaptable skin for every surface

4 08 2008

Projekt wykonany w ramach seminarium ze ‘scriptingu’ podczas studiow w Iaac-u. System wpelni wielokrzywiznowych paneli rozpinanych na czworokatnej siatce, ktory adaptuje sie do konkretnej plaszczyzny. Wymiary paneli bazuja na wlasciwosciach geometrycznych wprowadzonej formy przestrzennej.

Iaac seminar project under tutorship of Luis Fraguada, which presents potential of this tool in some of design processes. System of pillow-shape panels which are baesd on rectangular division and are fully adaptable to the inserted surface. Shape and dimensions of panels are related to that prelimanary object.

h2o absorber

4 08 2008

Koncowy projekt na Iaac wykonany we wspolpracy z Advaitem Potnisem. Prowadzacymi byli lluis Viu Rebes oraz Jordi Pages (thesis group 1: fixing variation; modalities of discrimination). To miesiac pracy ktory rozpoczal sie od koncepcji “abstrakcyjnej skory” – projektu opisywalnego poprzes zestaw relacji pomiedzy jego czesciami bardziej niz poprzez aktualizacje (jego finalna forme). Projekt wykonany w Paracloudzie – generatywnym plug-inie do Rhino.

Iaac thesis developed in collaboration with Advait Potnis under the tutorship of Lluis Viu Rebes and Jordi Pages (thesis group 1: fixing variation; modalities of discrimination). It’s a one month of work departing from the concept of the “abstract skin”. A design represented through set of relationships rather than through actualization. Work developed in Paracloud – a generative plug-in to Rhino.

The project is due to be exhibited as part of Iaac students’ work at the Bejing Architectural Biennale in 2008.

Here is a txt that accompanied the exhibition at Iaac:

H20 absorber is derived from a project done in collaboration with Advait Potnis during 3rd term Iaac studio led by Izaskun Chinchilla. The outcomes of the studio were conceptions of three CAD software products that architects could use on a daily basis, but which at the same time brought a new quality to the spatial proposals. Concept taken further by Advait Potnis was the one of the section, which allows for sharing depending on the amount of assigns of different economies who are about to inhabit the architectural proposal. I have decided to take further the concept of environmentally performative skin.
The skin is conceptualized as a generic system able to gather snow or water depending on the location where it is deployed. To apply the system on a particular surface of the building one needs to follow a set of rules:
1. Subdivide the building surface into sub-surfaces; approximate size of the sub-surfaces is: 600 by 600 cm.
2. Model the rain delivery to the building surface and estimate the necessary surface area of the collectors on each sub-surface.
3. Assign a section and a distortion for each sub surface, based on the approximate collectors’ surface area demanded. An outcome of the section and distortion choice is the collectors’ volume
4. Assign a type of the component. Each component has a specific volume to surface area ratio. Based on that the obtained surface area of the collectors can be estimated.
I have used Advait’s ReHabitat tower for the purpose of actualization. The tower is located in Mumbai; therefore the H2O absorber is deployed to gather water during 4 months of rainy season.
